The Opening Bell: Where currencies start on Monday, December 22, 2014

The NZDUSD opens at 0.7760 (mid-rate) this morning.

The NZDUSD is little changed from Friday, without any major data releases until Tuesday night when the US release their final GDP q/q the markets seem happy to drift.

It should be noted that with the lack of liquidity (due to the holiday season) any moves in the currency markets could be exaggerated.

Equity markets with the DAX and CAC being exceptions closed higher on Friday - Dow +0.15%, Nikkei +2.39%, Shanghai +1.67%, FTSE +1.23% DAX -0.25%, CAC -0.18%.

Gold prices closed slightly lower on Friday  at $1194 (-$3.70), Oil prices rose 4.81% closing Friday at $57.77 a barrel.

The current indicative mid-rates are:

NZDEUR           0.63.48
NZDGBP           0.4971
NZDJPY              92.68
NZDAUD           0.9505
NZDCAD           0.8981

There are no domestic data releases today.
