Special Report: The chart that tells the Interest Rate story
Bernard Hickey delivers a quick run through the key chart explaining what's happening with interest rates. Deposit rates are rising, despite the fall in the OCR this year and a slower fall in mortgage rates.
Hi Bernard I'd like to
Hi Bernard
I'd like to see the same chart show weighted averages, what your chart is missing is that most deposit money is moving into the best value term deposit rates and the best value mortgage rates at the same time which would bring those lines even closer together.
Sure looks like the only
Sure looks like the only way from here is up and OH lordy we aint dun gone paid off our 180 billion in household debt just yet. Dang if the oil price aint rising already. Sure smells a tad like inflation is on its way. Oh aint that juss great, we gonna have us all that money we gotta give to the oh so friendly bank and gosh darn but the food bill is rising and rates and insurance and user charges and taxes and oh crap juss about every sodding thing. Bugger
Bernard, Can u show a
Bernard,
Can u show a chart that shows the actual % difference between the 6 mth fixed mortgage rate and the 6 mth term deposit...??
eg. 6 mth mortgage 10% ... 6 mth term deposit 7.5%..... margin is 33%
6% 4% margin is 50%
This would be a much more honest way to reveal a banks changes in margins...
cheers

I just had a look
I just had a look at the US news and found this wee comment from the bloke Fisher at the FED."Policy makers are "constantly aware" of the need to consider an exit strategy from their unprecedented emergency initiatives during the crisis, and will end the programs at an appropriate time, he said. "We have to apply our judgment. There's nothing that tells us how to do this." I wonder if this "judgement" is going to be of the same high quality displayed during Greenspans era and will it be free of political interference because I doubt very much whether Obama's flunkies will tolerate going into the next pres election race with the Fed in the process of cutting off the flow of loot. It wouldn't be cricket, would it! That said, I guess the chances of the QE carry on, carrying on way past it's use by date, are very very high. Good night nurse.
