ASB improves market share in housing and term deposits
ASB reported it increased its market share in home lending and retail deposits in the second half of 2008, but its market share in business lending dipped as growth slowed.
ASB said its share of lending for housing rose to 23.4% by the end of 2008 from 23% at the end of 2007, while its share of retail deposits rose to 21.6% from 21.3% and its business lending share fell to 8.6% from 8.8%. Retail deposits grew 15% to NZ$30.1 billion, while the overall market's growth was 11.4%. ASB's home lending grew 6% for the year, while the overall market grew 4.4%. The full details on ASB's market share and arrears rates appear on page 93 of this presentation.
ASB also reported its proportion of home loans with loan to value ratios of over 80% was 14.9%, which was lower than three unidentified peers on 26.2%, 26.4% and 17.6%. Only the Reserve Bank will know who owns those numbers up until the December quarter, but my speculation would be that the higher LVR ratios are for Kiwibank, ANZ-National and Westpac in that order.
