Recession job losses
Treasury has released its December Economic and Fiscal Update (DEFU), which includes a lower growth forecast and a sharp increase in the forecasts for both unemployment and the government's budget deficit.
Based on a suggestion from one of our readers and commenters, Andy Hamiltion, we are keeping a tally of reported job losses, as an early-warning guide to the actual scale of them in 2009 and beyond.
It is Treasury's forecast that the unemployment rate will jump to 6.5% in 2010. "The unemployment rate is expected to increase to 6.5% mid-way through the 2010 calendar year, with the seasonally adjusted number of people unemployed expected to peak at 146,000 in June 2010, up 69,000 from December 2007 when unemployment was at a recent low." they said in that Report.
As Andy Hamilton pointed out, we don't get to see the official unemployment data until six weeks or so after the end of each calendar quarter. And that is a long time to wait.
Our tally may give an early indication of how tough it is actually getting.
We are asking readers to help keep this initiative up-to-date by adding notes and comments below. We will enter them in the tally, here >>>.
And, of course, we will be graphing the results weekly.

Well that awful fire in
Well that awful fire in Auckland has apparently claimed up to 100 jobs according to Radio NZ, although I would imagine some would be re-instated after insurance etc (or perhaps they are working on the basis businesses wont start again because of the recession)

I think we are probably
I think we are probably getting close to 5% already. I'm in architecture and engineering and a lot of firms have already laid off a lot of staff. Also know a couple of friends who have recently lost jobs in the financial sector. Things won't be pretty in retail, food or tourism either.
You might like to make
You might like to make sure that the information is correct. e.g. Wizard. Hasn't closed but will in time. Mushroom factory hasn't closed but MAY if forced to.
Unfortunately people are becoming unemployed and had you been watching that started way back in January this year. Before Xmas couldn't hire staff, after Jan, no trouble.
Lots of women having babies and therefore leaving the permanent workforce and lots left for Aussie so some equaling out along the way.
Not to underestimate the situation though as it is happening.
Good example of what I
Good example of what I mean.
Close to a hundred jobs could be lost as a result of the big blaze at Auckland's old Southdown Freezing Works.
Now that could be right but, the place will be demolished creating jobs, and will be rebuilt as something else, creating jobs. Some of the businesses (who were properly insured ) will continue in another location.
Be careful what you wish for!
NZ will have more shocks
NZ will have more shocks because we do not have a knowledge driven economy. Post-graduate qualifications are often a disadvantage in the job market. Low level polytechnic qualifications are viewed enough. Skill-pay parity is somewhat skewed towards low level qualifications in NZ. US auto-industry failed because it costs $75 per hour for a worker, not matching the basic skill level needed for an assembly work. The lack of skill-pay parity will kill the US auto-industry for good.
Too many social workers in NZ when compared to engineering or science graduates. This imbalance cannot continue for long. The government created lots of unproductive jobs when the economy grew due to the housing boom driven by the huge overseas debts. There is lot of scope to discipline our social sector spending, which includes the hospital & other bureaucracy.
Reading, listening and experiencing daily
Reading, listening and experiencing daily national & worldwide events I wouldn't be surprised to see an unemployment rate of over 10% by October 2009 and the NZ economy coming to a practical still- stand for a time.
Interesting comments from Sir John
Interesting comments from Sir John Gieve Deputy Governor of the BOE in Robert Preston's blog
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertpeston/
in particular...
"I think that one of the main lessons from this is that we need to develop some new instruments which sit somewhere between interest rates, which affect the whole economy and activity, and individual supervision and regulation of individual banks.
Maybe we need to develop something which bridges that gap and directly addresses the financial cycle and prevents the financial cycle and the credit cycle getting out of hand... I think we need to complement interest rates, which are a blunt instrument - you set one interest rate for the whole economy - with something which is more financial-sector specific."
Shades of Winston Peters. But
Shades of Winston Peters. But indeed he is right, however anytime a banker or a financier says "we need to develop something new" mostly that means another way to lose other peoples money.

A number of years ago
A number of years ago under the Official Info Act, I asked the Labour Government of the time just how many hours of paid employment you must have worked in a week to be deemed employed for government stats. Steve Mahary replied 30 hours a week.
I then replied if it was not as per the NZ Stats website stating that since the banker imposed liquidation and imposed social and economic policy of 1984 when the sellouts led by Douglas sold us down the river for their own personal fortunes, that since 1984 you have only had to have worked 1 hour of paid employment in a week to be deemed employed. I recieved a reply from the permanent backstop, Michael Cullen, stating that I was correct, it was one hour as determined and allowed by the International Labour Organisation. It is estimated the a fairer measure of employment is the measure of those that are underemployed, those with one or more job that can still not gain a level of financial equal opportunity, that measure would see the number of underemployed well exceed the bogus stats re employment that we are being sold today. Douglas repeatedly claims that his reforms lost 70,000 old jobs but created many more new ones, the con is that the old jobs were mainly permanent with the threshold of 30+ hours a week, replaced by mainly partime or casual jobs with a threshold of 1 hour per week.
Iain you raise an important
Iain you raise an important piont...the question has been in the back of my mind since this thread was published, but havnt had a chance to investigate..
I remember a quite few yrs ago, the Gov re vamped how the unemployment figures where arrived at...and quite a controversy at the true accuracy of those figures
I think it had to do with the hrs as you mention, dropping from 40 to 30, and the introduction of of working for income subsidies
Add to that youth under 23(??) are not listed if living with parents and supported without assistance.??
And a few other issues like this...
As side note:
A couple one semi retired, the other gives up a career to study full time for a degree.
The partner studying can get Student load, but no accommodation benefit
THEN one of the children (19) looses their job, gets a part time job 10 to 20 hrs a week min wage, cant get WFI, moves home.
Then that leaves the Semi retired partner having to support the home(mortgages etc) their partner AND the child under 23 with no assistance or can claim for any.
If one adds all income into the household,
...yet none are considered unemployed or below min income.
We know of many in this or similar situations..including post graduate students can get jobs...even at Mac Donalds now.
There is something certainly wrong with how the unemployment figures are calculated, and do not give true indications
Hence predictions under the current formula would be correct at 6/7% but a true figure would be in the 10 maybe even 12%+ range.
It maybe worth interest.co.nz to look into this, and if possible publish parrell stats..."oficial" and "true" ???

This could be an interesting trend in education as rolls may fall quite quickly as the crunch kicks in.
So parents are opting to
So parents are opting to home school there kids? Get real - most schools have staff to student ratios of 1:30 and climbing. Teaching is one profession that will not see mass redunancies.
Well done Craig, you managed
Well done Craig, you managed two sentences, of almost constructive blog. Home school, no, public school, yes! Hence the climbing ratios. Private schools are great, but giving your kids three years of quality education before you go broke can have some hinderance on the rest of thier education. During the eighties it was very proper for the rich white land owners to send their children to single sex boarding schools for a "proper" education, private, best of Brittish chum. It cost the cockies a fortune and once the children had completed thier education the farm was sold to pay the laons amassed on the back of low produt prices and high school fees.

andy - A good run of posts (not good for the people involved). Many people tell me things are not that bad here, but I know of 10 or so people who have lost reasonably senior jobs and of small businesses that were doing great, but are now collapsing. This time last year, only one person I knew was looking for work.
An interesting sideline - several public primary schools in the Grammar zone in Auckland have closed their out of zone intake - even to siblings of students already attending the school. The schools involved have seen a dramatic increase in enrollments as people abandon the private schools.

This will bring a wry smile to some folks faces - several hundred inland revenue jobs to face axe in next wave of government cuts:
It does Andy, it does....
Well the words of the month appears to be "skills & productive"..
I dont care what all the experts in the world think but unless you are hard working, honest and have integrity....All the skills you learn are void....
It annoys the shits out of me about all these hair brained counterproductive courses coming out of poly tech and the likes....
Its a total lost generation, with a few that luckly have fallen through the safety net?? and strived.
What skills does a bloody latee maker have when theres no jobs...!!!!!
Instead of building a cycle track send them srub cutting...Get rid of DOC and all there useless (outside DOC) degrees...Bring back the forestry service....
Bit like chairman Mao,,, Send all the intellectuals to the communes and country and learn the basics of humanity...HARD WORK....COMMUNICATION and RESPECT...
The whole moral fabric of society is changed....
To be honest, I think this will be a huge blessing in disguise with mass job losses....Which will not only force people to adapt, But bring back a more community based social structure...ie. Look out and help those less fortunate through sheer bad luck....And not through choice (latee maker).
As Andy rightly says, Unemployment is going to hit all and sundry...Rolling stone gathers no moss...
Latee anyone???
next on the chopping block
next on the chopping block must be Housing NZ...those boys and gals have spent 100s of millions of dollars on the design of grandiose schemes that have never been built, criminal waste indeed
Heck why stop there - EECA, Department of building and housing etc etc
My experience with most of these clowns is they've got their heads in the clouds, they are the worst kind of liberal champagne socialists
Total waste of space
Boyesy - good point, teach some of these clowns hard work and respect
some of the crap I have received from our civil "servants" has been a disgrace

In Southland, up to 60 workers are to lose their jobs after Bright Wood New Zealand announced it was closing its Otautau sawmill.
From the same article:
Cadbury also acted yesterday, confirming more jobs would be cut at its Dunedin plant.
Last month, Cadbury announced a proposal to cut 45 supervisor and leading-hand roles, and create 19 new positions, as part of a management shake-up.
"After careful consideration of all the proposals put forward by our employees, we can now confirm that our original proposal has been accepted," Cadbury spokesman Daniel Ellis said.
The move will result in the loss of 26 jobs, which are part of the 145 redundancies announced by the plant in August.

I think the key aspect
I think the key aspect to job losses is the hidden, non publicised redundancies. Those where only a few people are let go (or not replaced when staff leave for whatever reason) and they slip under the rader. I can think of a number of orgnisations where friends/family work where it has been the slow drip drip of jobs disappearing which over the last year would add up to a reasonable portion of each places workforce without any real notice (excpet for those working there).
Interesting times.

The recession job loss chart
The recession job loss chart at http://www.interest.co.nz/joblosses.asp is only shwoing an average of 2,000 jobs per month being lost. Perhaps it is time that businesses who are adding employees, new startups etc were tracked so that we get a clearer net picture.
Job losses do not appear to be happening at anywhere near a fast enough clip for there to be any real concern or any prospect of 10% becoming unemployed. There are new factories opening, new supermarkets and malls - so why not put some emphasis on this side of the job scene?
If you hear of some new jobs being created add them here. BNZ are advertising for a whole bunch of business managers. I guess they will need them to cope with the recovery and processing of applications for the funding of new ventures.

Andrewj - yes the job losses shown here are probably just the thin end of the wedge - since NZ is dominated by small enterprises with small workforces, the loss of a few jobs here and there never make it into the press - cumulatively they are very significant. I think we will see a considerably worse unemployment picture in NZ than concensus has it.
One only has to look at the case in the US to see how initial predictions of unemployment topping out at lower levels that have already been reached have been found to be woefully inaccurate.
Confirmation that what we document
Confirmation that what we document here is the thin end of the wedge - government say 1000 are joining the dole every week (and there will be plenty others made unemployed who cant get the dole):
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10580169
That would be 4000+ a month losing jobs (in fact likely 5000-6000, allowing for those who cant get dole etc). On that basis the data thrown up on this thread is probably a 2-3 times underestimate of what is going on.
andy, "I think we will
andy, "I think we will see a considerably worse" don't bet on it mate. The stats will have to go through the washer and the blender before being cooked a bit and then released for the peasants to swallow. Re; double counting - yes
Re; double counting - yes agree, I think the government 'summaries' detailing 1000 job losses a week should be kept out of this data set. This list of job losses here was meant to illustrate the depth, geographical dispersion and variety of job losses in the country (which I think it does) - it cannot be an absolute count (it will always be an underestimate), but I think including 'blanket' stats such as 4000 a month is not helpful.
