Prices ranged $430,000 to $6.52 million at Bayleys' latest auctions

Prices ranged from $430,000 to $2.9 million at Bayleys' latest Auckland auctions, with the cheapest property being an apartment that's popular with students in the university precinct, while a townhouse at Bucklands Beach was the most expensive.

In Bayleys' Hamilton auction room, prices started at $487,000 for a three bedroom house on a 760 square metre section, while the top price of $6.52 million was paid for a dairy farm at Morrinsville.

The catch is... the property is only worth half what they paid for it.

Interesting to note that out of the 16 Auckland properties put up for auction, 14 were over $1M and well over in many cases. The few remaining unsold ones will be over $1M in any event.
At this rate the median price for Auckland will exceed $1M within the year.
Why not?
Money is almost free.

It would have been good to get some feedback from more than just the usual suspects as I thought we were generally upbeat and humorous but I understand that the site needs a wide readership. Just for the record doublegz and ZS are different people folks. There a quite a number of people in the same circumstances as us out there.

At the risk of sounding a party pooper I think the main issue is when people find a very serious situation a bucket of laughs. Apparently people are seriously worried about levels of depression and suicide in young people who are working their guts out with their future seemingly slipping away - only to see investors celebrating gains and projecting themselves as superior. Anyway economic cycles are cyclical and pride comes before a fall.

This is what I've been trying to explain thank you!!! I have already been treated for severe anxiety, panic disorder, insomnia and depression. ALL because I worked myself into a frenzy last year trying to save and getting no closer. I got better and despite everyone's concerns I went back to the same thing, over-working myself to save for the deposit I need. Yet the goalposts keep shifting up. Why I'm I doing it? I'm making myself ill. But, hope keeps me grinding. Hope that I can finally make it through. At what cost though? It's a hopeless desperate situation, that's the truth. From a 'lowly renter'.

I thoroughly sympathise with you. I believe the RB would have been gutted when they saw the REINZ March data and will implement new and tighter measures to slow Auckland and even other areas down in terms of housing inflation. Wheeler strikes me as a very determined person and will be embarrassed over current market conditions. Watch this space because if he doesn't do anything Moody's and alke will downgrade our economy.

I wouldn't take it too hard doublegz, you haven't been banned. NZ has a strong egalitarian heritage and it is held as being rather sacred. It's what makes it so attractive to immigrants. Unfortunately things are changing and it is quite traumatic. I actually have a lot of sympathy with the sentiment but I think we are seen as striking at the heart of this belief. Time to tread softly and not rattle the cages. Over and out. Jupiter2 is lifting off.

I know Porritt Avenue in Birkenhead. The houses were spec built generally and are pretty ordinary. To a property they are all as ugly as the one sold by Bayleys. Mind blowing really.

They know better than me but getting rid of negative gearing would be a good start. Imagine the politicians doing that when they own so many rentals amongst themselves.
