Getting woman onto your board is undisputedly good for a company’s bottom line.  

That is what the Credit Suisse Research Institute found analysing the “Gender Diversity and Corporate Performance” of 2,400 global companies.

Over the past six years, companies with female directors on board averaged 14 percent net income growth.

This compares to 10 percent for those with no female directors.

The local ’25 percent group,’ wants companies to realise this voluntarily and have woman taking up one-quarter of board seats by 2015.

While internationally others are talking compulsion, I want to get to the top-table under my own steam than because I have mammary glands. Throughout my time in Federated Farmers, I have never once encountered anyone who has looked down at me as some upstart Sheila. Hand-on-heart, gender issues don’t seem to come into farming.

What counts is personality and mana, not to mention effort and skill.

In 2011, Jeanette Maxwell broke Federated Farmers modern glass ceiling as the first elected female board member. It speaks volumes Jeanette didn’t care because it was incidental to her being elected chair of our Meat & Fibre industry group. It is one thing to break a glass ceiling but another to shatter it.

America’s President Obama broke a different ceiling when elected to the Oval Office but the real test was last November when he became the first black man re-elected President of the United States. While not in the same league as President Obama, I followed Jeanette onto the Federation’s seven person board mid last year.

In the space of 12-months, Federated Farmers went from no woman board members to two. In pure percentage terms that is 29 percent but like those financial disclosures read at breakneck speed, “the amount of woman on Federated Farmers Board will go up or down according to ability.”

I do not know if we will have more or less woman on Federated Farmers Board by 2015 but gender will play no part in it.

That has not stopped the lovers of red tape at the European Commission from adopting a draft directive last November, requiring 40 percent of non-executive board positions must be filled by woman by 2020. Malaysia has gone further, requiring 30 percent of public company directors must be women by the end of this year.

Regulation is a twin-edged sword when the real culprit is cultural.

Forcing gender politics means that while all board members are equal, some will become more equal than others.

There is a strata on almost any board with the old hands and the newbies; breathing through their noses until they learn the ropes. Forcing things risks creating a board within a board, outwardly ticking all the right boxes except woman are denied a qualitative step forward.

I find farming to be a socially progressive meritocracy with programmes like the Agri-Woman’s Development Trust and the Dairy Woman’s Network.

Rural Woman NZ is very much Federated Farmers partner too.

To me the real change to board composition won’t come from more regulation, but the need for companies to perform better.

Women also need to stand up and make things happen because that is how we are shoulder tapped.

In writing this, it has made me realise that once you cut through a farmer’s stoic exterior, there is the beating heart of an egalitarian.

Getting that message out wider may start helping us to get on the environmental front foot because you should never judge a book by its cover.

The numbers stack up. The

The numbers stack up. The companies that realise the contribution woman can make to an organisation are more than likely the better performing companies as well. Lets face it 50% of the available intelligence has been absent. There is a large pool of talented individuals that have through past preference and to some extent lack of confidence been absent from the board room. Agriculture particularily has some fine emerging woman leaders and their contribution will be appreciated in the coming  years.

Perhaps the problem Feds

Perhaps the problem Feds face, mist, is that different farmers want different things from them. e.g. you say they seem to have lost sight of the ball (business profitability and business individuality).  To me as a paid up member I value their policy analyst work as critical to my business.  Business profitability is the responsibility of the individual. 

Different regions have different issues - it is not a one issue fits all, especially at micro level.  Executive members at regional and national level come and go, some are great, some not.   It is a voluntary organisation whose committees/board are elected by the members, so you get what you vote for - if you don't vote, don't complain. ;-).

I think one of the biggest

I think one of the biggest issues that the Feds face is the enormous amount of issues that they have to deal with. Until compliance is significantly reduced across the board the ineffectiveness of the organisation will continue. Government and it's Agencies have jammed up private enterprise with so many issues that effective functioning is at a critical point of failure.

Companies that don't have female representation are displaying foolish behaviour and the ability and mindset of those at the helm of those organisations needs to be questioned. The current crop of NZ Farmers has always recognised the role of females at all levels.

If we are talking about the

If we are talking about the Feds then I believe the organisation has lost it's way particularily at the top. They do good work at lobbying and policy analysts level in most cases. Although I question their stance on the recent bill promoted by Jeanette Walker where they never got behind what may have been a good starting point to better resolutions from bank farmer conflict. Really the organisation is a rudderless ship unsure of what direction to go in.

I concur with your comments about the lack of direction at the top Zeebeck. Some provinces are better than others. The folks at the top do have a finite term. :-)

 

As a dairy farmer I do wonder sometimes if we aren't paying many times for the same thing.  Take farm 'sustainability initiatives' - Fonterra, DairyNZ, Feds are all on the bandwagon wanting to 'represent' us. They have different views and then add in the Regional Councils and there are some fairly mixed messages out there about what the 'rank and file' dairy farmer thinks.  My experience is that Feds are the only ones, who really canvas their members on issues.  Adding to this confusion are the difference in regional council rules. e.g. some require fail safe devices on travelling irrigators, some don't. (Why this isn't a requirement, beats me).

 

Farming opinions now are IMO more diverse now than before.  The rise of the corporate farmer and debt levels among a significant minority is often at odds with family owned, intergenerational farmer thinking. Therefore it is no easy ask for any organisation to be representative of ALL farmers.  For me, it comes back to what value my province and the analysts add to my business.  So far they add far more than the annual sub. :-)
