ASB, BNZ, Westpac, ANZ close Christchurch branches and donate NZ$4 million to quake appeals

New Zealand's four biggest banks, ASB, BNZ, Westpac and ANZ, have closed their branches in Christchurch today and have announced donations totaling NZ$4 million to earthquake appeals.

ASB said all its staff had been safely accounted for and it had closed all its branches today so staff could be with their families. It said it had donated NZ$1 million towards the Christchurch Earthquake Support Fund and had opened an account to receive donations: 12-3205-0146808-00.

BNZ said all its branches in the region would be closed on Wednesday and it had donated NZ$1 million to the BNZ Red Cross Canterbury Earthquake Appeal Account. Its number was 02-0500-0982004-000 for those who wanted to make donations. It said it would not charge transaction fees on the account.

BNZ will not charge any transaction fees on this Appeal Account.

ANZ New Zealand said it had donated NZ$1 million to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal and donations could be made at this account number: 01-1839-0188939-00. It said branches in the quake zone were closed until further notice.

Westpac said it had also closed all its branches in the affected region until further notice and had donated NZ$1 million to the Westpac Canterbury Care Fund.

It had set up an account for the public to donate money to. It is 03 0207 0617331 00 and all funds from it will go to the Salvation Army to help those affected in Canterbury.

TSB announced three month loan repayment holidays for affected borrowers. See more here at TSB's website.

Kiwibank said a Red Cross Canterbury Earthquake Appeal account named RED CROSS with the number 38-9009-0759479-00 was available for those wanting to donate.

The new Building Society Holdings, which includes CBS Canterbury, Southern Cross Building Society and Marac Finance, said its Riccarton and Sydenham branches were undamaged, but had been closed to allow staff to look after their families. See more detail here.

Rabobank said it would donate NZ$100,000 to the Salvation Army's Canterbury Earthquake appeal.

UPDATE on ASB services

 

ASB will be re-opening its Hornby Mall branch for reduced hours between 10:00am and 4:00pm tomorrow, Thursday 24 February.

The branch will be offering essential services to ASB customers. This includes the issuing of replacement ASB FastCash cards to customers who may have lost their FastCash cards during the earthquake.

In addition to the Hornby Branch, the following nine ATMs are operating:

Barrington:

256 Barrington Street, Barrington Shopping Centre

Bishopdale:

135 Farrington Avenue, Bishopdale Mall

Fendalton:

Corner of Ilam and Clyde Roads

Hornby:

402-414 Main South Road – three ATMs at this site.

Northlands:

Northlands Shopping Centre

Riccarton:

112 Riccarton Road; and

Corner Blenheim and Acheron Drives, Riccarton.
