Have your say: ACT leader Brash flies to UK, US for briefings from Bank of England Governor and IMF officials on global economy. Will it help ACT?

As his party struggles in the polls, ACT Party leader Don Brash is this week in the UK and US for briefings on the global economy from politicians, Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, and IMF officials.

The NZ Herald reported the trip, saying Brash, a former NZ Reserve Bank Governor, had hoped to keep it secret so as not to have it look like a political stunt.

The dash 'oop north' comes as Treasury is set to release its Pre-Election Fiscal Update, or PREFU, today, which would be a "key event" for ACT, Brash said. ACT is pushing the government to focus more on returning debt to pre-2005 levels, and closing the gap with Australia through policies touted by the Brash-led 2025 taskforce.

See and compare ACT's economic policies with those of other parties in our Election 2011 party policy section here.

The Herald reported the ACT Party board gave Brash their blessing for the trip, although there was understood to be some concern within the party about the timing of the trip, as the November 26 election quickly approaches.

Brash is not currently in Parliament, so is paying for the trip himself.

ACT's fate this election will be determined by whether candidate John Banks is able to win the Epsom electorate, as the party is unlikely to reach the 5% threshold in the general vote for entering Parliament without an electorate seat.

But polling suggests National candidate Paul Goldsmith is leading the race in Epsom, although a UMR Reasearch poll commissioned by the NBR released last week showed 35% of Goldsmith voters would give their tick to Banks if Prime Minister John Key told them to do so.

Key has so far said National would chase the party vote in Epsom, but has not formally expressed instructions for voters to give their electorate votes to Banks.

What do you think about Brash's dash? Will this help ACT get more traction during the election campaign?

Seems like a waste of an airfare to me.

All he needed to do was to read all our of Global Financial Crisis coverage, which is handily grouped under this tag

PS. One wit told me via Twitter when asked if it was a good idea: "Depends. Is it a one way ticket?"

So Don's freaking out about the global economy and it's Ponzi financial system - a system he perpetuated as head of our RB.

What's he going to do when it's confirmed the whole thing is insolvent? Can the ACT party save the world?

Some nice, self sufficient lifestyle blocks for sale around the country, Don

I think Don retired to one of those and found it didnt work too well...maybe it was the shock of actually working as opposed to being a financial uh worker...I mean huge difference between actually growing/making something and moving numbers on a spreadsheet.

Was it not Don who orchestrated our own ponzi scheme at the helm of R.B.Rena?

Has Dr Bollard - the current NZ Reserve Bank Governor - gone?

What  'role'  is Dr Brash performing? Just an academic one? Can anyone just turn up....

Odd, who gave him the mandate?

I'd wouldn't call Bernards writings pro-labour, more like anti-status quo. Keep it up!

Two ticks Green :-)...  a middle finger from the middle class to the status quo.

Then again, Winston might decide to run in your electorate (or has he announced something already?).

Take care, Chairman Moa! "Motorcycle deaths have risen an astonishing 128 percent since 1997. People at mid-life want to taste things they haven't tried before, and the acquisition of a bike and a set of leathers is becoming a popular diversion for the aging Baby Boomers...".

He's job hunting given he knows the future prospect for a NZ taxpayer funded salary isn't looking good.

Funny, when you look at his resume - what has he ever done that was actually successful?

No - that was David Lange and Roger Douglas.  But they hardly "invented it" - they just implemented it.
