  • Climate induced sea level rise, a rise on the water table, and land damage from the earthquakes have increased the flooding risk to some areas of South Brighton and on the estuary margins. We will review the flooding risk to these areas and investigate offering compensation for home and landowners who wish to leave, and returning these areas to natural vegetation which could help buffer other residential areas.
  • The Green Party supports the proposed Avon-Otakaro River Park as a way of connecting the city to the sea and the eastern suburbs, and helping boost visitors to New Brighton. Consolidating the retail area around the mall may help make it more attractive and friendly. (more here)

  • Labour will partner with the local community, local businesses and the City Council to revitalise New Brighton and make it the pride of eastern Christchurch.
  • Labour in government will work with the Council to establish a New Brighton Community Revitalisation Project to coordinate and facilitate the town centre’s transformation over a ten year period.
  • The housing plan for New Brighton will be mixed-income and mixed tenure (rentals and home ownership), and this will include affordable homeownership through KiwiBuild. (more here)
