Will the Bitcoin type blockchain system take over transaction and operational platforms in financial services?

The blockchain sounds interesting. It seems to use crypto technology to guarantee "the truth" about a transaction. But I don't understand how it works or how you would create one for your own organisation. And could the government ever create one for to designate official documents as being valid at some point in time?
