The ANZ Group's chief executive in China is hopeful the bank can ultimately generate more profit and revenue in China than it does in New Zealand.

Charles Li, ANZ's China CEO told interest.co.nz during a New Zealand visit this week that whilst ANZ doesn't plan to take on the big Chinese banks in the general banking market, there are good growth opportunities in China for it. ANZ became the first Australasian bank to be locally incorporated in China in 2010 and has invested significantly in its business in the world's second biggest economy since as the group pursues CEO Mike Smith's Super Regional Strategy.

The Shanghai-based Li also spoke about what the Chinese government controlled Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) may want to do in New Zealand if it successfully obtains banking registration from the Reserve Bank.
