October sales spurt had a big international component, probably helped by the iPhone6 release, hurt by fast fall of daily deals category

BNZ and MarketView reported today that online retail sales in October were up +13% on the same month a year ago, a continuation of recent strength.

However it is the international merchants that are benefiting most, rising +28% on the same comparison.

The core driver of that growth was a surge in electrical and electronic goods. Apple released new products in October.

Local merchants only managed a +4% gain in comparison, which is similar to what is reported  from bricks & mortar stores.

Local merchants are still the largest sector with 58% of all sales. These are dominated by grocery, liquor and 'specialised food' categories.

Still, that share is down -2.5% on the same month a year ago.

The local tally is being hurt by the fast-fading specialist 'daily deals' category. They are down -16% year-on-year although in recent months the rate of decline seems to have slowed.
