  • We have proposed a ‘blue zone’ for flood prone areas of Christchurch. This would be a voluntary package to give flood prone residents the choice of moving to higher ground, with the Government offering to purchase the properties hardest hit by repeated flooding so that home owners can get on with their lives. • If needed, we will amend the law to make it clear that EQC must pay for earthquake damage in the form of land subsidence or other geological changes, and we will make that law cover the Canterbury earthquakes.
  • We will deploy army engineers, if need be, to get the homes protected so that families don’t have to endure further flooding. While the work is ongoing, we will ensure that temporary housing is available for families that need it. (more here)
