The Opening Bell: Where currencies start for Tuesday, October 29, 2013

The NZD/USD opens around 0.8290 this morning after trading between 0.8270 and 0.8330 since Friday.

Global markets have had a quiet session overnight. The S&P 500 up 0.14%, gold us up 0.15% and oil is +0.8%.

US corporate earnings continue to beat expectations. The S&P 500 is up more than 6% since the earnings season started in the 2nd week of October and is up 23% for the year.

EUR/USD has held up and opens around 1.38 while the AUD/USD has drifted lower and opens around 0.9580.

The NZD opens at current indicative mid rates:  0.8660 AUD, 0.6010 EUR, 0.5134 GBP, 81.06 JPY, 0.8665 CAD.

Nothing to report from NZ today. From Australia RBA Governor Stevens is speaking at 11:30am.

Tonight we get US Retail Sales and Consumer Confidence. The focus this week will be on the RBNZ & the Fed’s monetary policy decisions on Thursday morning.
