The Opening Bell: Where currencies start for Tuesday, February 11, 2014

By Dan Bell

The NZD/USD opens at 0.8265 this morning, having traded sideways during a quiet evening for markets.

Very little data in our region today - NAB business survey in Australia at 1.30pm.

Can it maintain the high level seen in December?

A bank holiday in Japan today.

Stock markets currently: Dow Jones -0.1%, S&P -0.03 %, FTSE +0.3%.

The NZD opens the crosses - 0.9240 AUD, 0.6060 EUR, 0.5040 GBP, 84.45 JPY, 0.9130 CAD.

Tonight's focus will be on the testimony of the new Fed Chair, Janet Yellen.

Her comments will be closely watched, especially given the US unemployment rate of 6.6% is so close to the tapering target previously set at 6.5%.

That speech is at 4.00am NZT.
