The RBNZ publishes monthly average rates, and these are the basis of this chart. These are the 'simple averages' of the daily rates they publish, un-weighted for daily volumes. (They are not the month-end rates.)
This series allows you to take a longer perspective of currency movements, without the data 'noise' of daily fluctuations.

The data presented would be very useful, but it has apparently not been updated since February, 2010. That old is almost useless. Sad.

Since January 2000, the average rate NZD:AUD is NZ$1 = AU$ 0.8512, or AU$ 1 = NZ$ 1.1748, so we are currently sitting 8% below that average.
Since January 1990, the average is NZ$1 = AU$ 0.8358
Since the floating of the NZD in July 1986, the average is NZ$1 = AU$ 0.8326
