Tourism accommodation

Occupancy rates for New Zealand's accommodation industry are the key marker for our tourism industry. This chart tracks data released monthly by Statistics NZ, and is updated about six weeks after the end of each month.

Guest-night data is collected in great detail by Statistics NZ, but only the national data is presented here.

Regional and other data is available directly from www.statistics.govt.nz

Data is highly seasonal, and is made up of four core components:

1. Hotels and resorts
2. Motels, motor inns, and apartments
3. Backpackers
4. Holiday parks

I see the occupancy rates

I see the occupancy rates follow almost the same trends every month. Why is that? I was expecting to see differences between spring travel and winter travel. I think I need further translation of this chart.

I didn't expect February to

I didn't expect February to be the busiest time for accommodation, I wonder what is the cause for it... Could it be that the prices are a lot lower after the winter holidays, making them irresistible deals? I know I am crazy about finding cheap activities whenever I plan a vacation, so this might be it.

Guest nights flat in December

Guest nights flat in December from November.

Tourism not kicking on. As we saw with Tourism Holdings' profit warning.
