90 seconds at 9am: Dow up 2% on good US economic news; Euro stronger too

Bernard Hickey details the key news overnight in 90 seconds at 9am in association with the BNZ, including news US stock markets rose more than 2% on reassuring signs of economic growth in the world's biggest economy. 

The New York Economic Index showed the 11th consecutive month of growth and Rupert Murdoch's US$12 billion bid to buy out the rest of BSkyB also boosted stocks. 

The euro also rose after positive bond auction results in Spain, Belgium and Ireland, reassuring those worried about the European financial crisis, for a day at least. 

Meanwhile, the New Zealand dollar also strengthened somewhat to 69.8 USc after Winston Reid scored the equaliser against Slovakia. Go the All Whites! To be fair, the stronger appetite for risk globally also boosted the currency...
