Carter Holts puts 29 dairy farms for sale

Forestry firm Carter Holt Harvey is putting 29 dairy farms on the market with a total asking price of $224.5 million. The sale, marketed by Bayley's Real Estate and PGG Wrightson, is claimed to be the biggest corporate farming sell-off in NZ reports TVNZ. Carter Holt has converted post-harvest forestry land around Tokoroa into what Bayley's describes as "state-of-the-art 'designer' farms". The farms range in size from 218 to 726 hectares and are asking between $5.1 million and $10.4 million. They each come with a new dairy shed and a deep bore with a pressure water system. "Each of the farms have been designed for optimum efficiency, with approximately 1,500 metres being the longest walking distance for the cows, centrally located, top-of-the-line dairy sheds, and three architect-design homes located for both convenience and views," says Bayleys senior country agent Mike Fraser-JonesFraser-Jones says Carter Holt Harvey sold off some of its land around Tokoroa in the late 1990s but retained 30,000 hectares with the best contour, soil type and locality to develop into dairying. The farms have gradually been brought into production since mid 2008, and there are almost 20,000 cows across the farms at the moment.
