Agree whole-heartedly with Averageman. The advent of the internet changed the game years ago. I have sold several homes privately in New Zealand over the years and it really isn't that hard. You just need to have the time to do it, and be careful to follow the process. It is particularly useful tool in a slow market where sellers and their agents are asking a higher price than buyers want, or are able to pay. Without an Agents Commission, sellers can afford to lower their selling price to entice a buyer to purchase which results in a win-win for both parties. The crucial point is that, although the seller may be no better off financially (having sold for a lower price) they can move on with their lives, which is very often the principal objective.
