Interest.co.nz needs a senior, experienced, business or economics journalist to work from our Auckland office
press gallery

We are seeking a new senior & experienced journalist with a background covering the important factors that drive the New Zealand economy.

You will ideally have a track record of reporting on macroeconomic issues and an understanding of the Reserve Bank's role, and be able to explain what it means and why it matters to a wide range of readers.

A successful applicant will ideally have experience in economic and business reporting, be interested in what makes the New Zealand economy tick, and be able to articulate how this intersects with public policy and commercial decision making.

Being able to write analysis, plus having an opinion and being able to articulate it, would also help.

You will also help edit our news service, and assess the value of a range of content that comes our way.

Variety is promised. Flexibility and adaptability will be necessary to help us maintain our trusted, authentic and independent reputation. We see our role as explaining the New Zealand economy to New Zealanders. You will need to do that in a balanced way.

You'll be working online, not behind a paywall, with wide readership. Podcast and video opportunities are included. You can see our readership levels and demographics here.

You would be working with this experienced team of business journalists.

This is a salaried role, starting in April 2026.

It is strictly an in-office full-time position, based in our Auckland office. Occasional travel may be required.

Applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.

You can either contact us via this link, or directly.
