Dear Readers:
Our service was unavailable this morning because some back-end updates went very wrong.
To deliver our news, data, tools, and commenting system, we run a set of interrelated platforms, most based on open-source software running on virtual servers. Maintaining that set, having it work together, and making the regular upgrades is always a challenge, but our talented team display their skills best when you don't notice all that work that goes on behind the scenes.
However, we aren't perfect - as today's outage reveals.
We learned some stuff today so this particular issue should not happen again. Hopefully it will be a long time before the next stumble appears.
Thank you for your patience.
We should be back normally now.

Sorry the gremlins got in the works
A likely story.
A bit like david and goliath.....a rather tall story.
sure.....we believe you.
Here is some fact.
If ya cannot pay yer electric bill now, what are ye gonna do when bill hikes our infrastructure orf and everyone's electrics bill goes up.
open systems is as vulnerable as any other server, when the very server ye own now for electricity production, becomes mom and pops server (yeah right)... and that will serve you all......right at twice the cost, just to run the server you bought, but must keep updating, to maintain..................CURRENCY.
the uk hiked orf its own infrastructure, now they pay exhorbitant fees to the very people they sort to benefit from. (Sound familiar).
But a benefit in my eyes, is when you own yer own infrastructure, then you can manage to keep yer overheads down and the overheads away from yer munny, with their sticky fingers, then ye can maintain your own CURRENCY, you currently........................................................OWN.
flogging orf a dead duck is one thing, flogging orf yer own infrastructure, is tantamount to financial suicide, as we all need to ensure our overheads do not become someone elses....................... vast profit.
fiddling and farting about with tiny sums of munny, but borrowing billions to stand still for now (nay ..go backwards), will never pay orf in the long run.
I know it is a tall order, and simple logic, but can someone enlighten a simple man, how an imbecile cannot see the obvious about an essential NZ infrastructure ie.........electric.....................BILL.
Taint david and goliath, but i prefer my tall story, to yours.................DAVID.
it has an element of truth in it......................
just kidding....you may be just telling the truth.
