Potential Labour/Greens alliance support jumps ahead of National in latest Roy Morgan poll as RBNZ cuts interest rates to boost flagging NZ economy

Content supplied by RoyMorgan

During September support for National fell 6% to 44.5% now just behind a potential Labour/Greens alliance 46% (up 8%) according to the latest Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll. If a NZ Election were held now the latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll shows that the Election would be too close to call with fourth party New Zealand First in a position to pick New Zealand’s next Government.

Support for the National partners was little changed with the Maori Party 1.5% (unchanged), Act NZ 0.5% (unchanged) and United Future 0.5% (up 0.5%).

Of the three Parliamentary Opposition parties - Labour’s support is now at 31% (up 4%), Greens 15% (up 4%) although support for NZ First decreased to 5.5% (down 2.5%) – the lowest level of support for New Zealand First since last year’s New Zealand Election. Of the parties outside Parliament the Conservative Party of NZ is 1% (up 1%), the Internet-Mana Party alliance is at 0.5% (unchanged) and support for Independent/ Others is 0% (down 1%).

The latest NZ Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has increased to 128.5pts (up 8.5pts) in September. An increasing majority of NZ electors 58% (up 4%) say NZ is ‘heading in the right direction’ compared to 29.5% (down 4.5%) that say NZ is ‘heading in the wrong direction’. NZ Government Confidence is far higher than in Australia.

Gary Morgan, Executive Chairman, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“A potential Labour/ Greens alliance 46% (up 8% in September) now leads Prime Minister John Key’s National (44.5%, down 6%) as New Zealand’s economy slows and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut New Zealand interest rates to 2.75% (down 0.25%) last week. Falling interest rates have contributed to a plummeting New Zealand Dollar – which dipped below 63 US cents for the first time since July 2009 early in September and remains near six year lows today at 63.9 US cents.

“Adding to the concerns for Prime Minister Key was below forecast growth figures for the June Quarter 2015 released this week showing the New Zealand economy grew at only 0.4%, an annual rate of growth of only 2.4% - the slowest for two years. The plunge in the price of dairy products early in 2015 has continued to have an impact on New Zealand’s economy. Dairy product exports – particularly to China – are New Zealand’s largest export earner.

“Although the New Zealand economy is slowing down, the latest ANZ-Roy Morgan New Zealand Consumer Confidence Rating shows Consumer Confidence steadied in August – now at 110.8 (up 1pt) after four straight months of falls and Roy Morgan Government Confidence improved strongly to 128.5 (up 8.5pts) with 58% (up 4%) of New Zealanders saying New Zealand is ‘heading in the right direction’.”

Electors were asked: “If a New Zealand Election were held today which party would receive your party vote?” This latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile telephone, with a NZ wide cross-section of 876 electors in September 2015. Of all electors surveyed 8% (up 2.5%) didn’t name a party.

We need Winston!

Just wait until the minimum wage migration and per capita recession really start to bite. Throw in an Auckland housing crunch and an inevitable Royal Commission into EQC, then JK will be throwing his hands in the air and the reign of tyranny will be over.

About time too.

Winston for PM!

third term govt blues,
blaming the other side no longer works as most people answer you have had plenty of time to fix
the other problem they have is no partners so have to get to almost 50%
JK will now be regretting going after WP

Still looks like national is the only party able to provide a strong unified government that doesn't have to compromise on everything to get anything done. What we need is for the conservatives to get most of the "NZ First" vote and we'll have by far the most awesome government that we've ever seen in NZ.

The young adults of this generation have seen and appreciate the center politics of the national party, a hint of right wing as could be provided by Colin Craig would be perfect!

I assume that is a joke?? If not, that's pretty scary thinking.

What National needs is 3 years in the wilderness and to drop all the arrogant and incompetent buffoons who make up most of the front bench.

National needs to return to its core values and govern with integrity and honesty like former National governments did.

Selling the country out, allowing insurance companies and Chinese interests to destroy the soul of our citizens by respectively delaying individuals rights to compensation and beating up house prices is not what the National Party of old stood for. We need a fairer NZ, for NZers.

Maybe , unfortunately the conservative party is till too small to form government at the minute.

I always find it fascinating when ppl describe the National party as centre, for me that shows just how far their right wing views are off the the right.

So a strong unified left Govn bad, despite the fact that the Green's have a history in Parliament of being moderate. But lets have the fundie christian right nutjobs which using their past "success: in Govn as an indictator, is, um good? Juts look at the US Republican party and tea party for how that is working out.

"awesome" such a Govn doesnt meet my criteria of awesome that is for sure.

oh wait..."young adults of this generation" you are taking the mick right?

"The Greens have a history in Parliament of being moderate"........WHEN? They have never been moderate they always want to tax the crap out of anyone or any business and give it to someone who is not working....they rely on poverty......that is not moderation.....it is parasite behaviour on hard working people and the poor.

National on the same side of the fence as Labour and Greens.....but National included big Corporates in its handouts and just like every player on the left of the fence they milk SME;s.

Are we talking about the gay hating, conservative christian, anti progress, environment destroying, old boys club, elitist, pro big business, tax cuts for the uber rich right wing? Sounds ideal for the youth vote.

Give it some time, the brain is not fully developed at your age. This makes it harder to assess the consequences of your actions.

..I'd say we are more likely to see the opposite as the majority loose out more and more to the 1% ers. The rise of Jeremy Corban UK and Bernie Sanders US is interesting.

I was 29 when I started commenting on this site (now I am old, well sort of, well I'm at least semi retired!), and I would say when your a bit older and wiser, your view will probably have changed. I am an ardent right winger, but these guys we have right now fit somewhere else, I'm not sure where, but a bit of Soviet something is in the mix.

And let's not exclude any Mussolini influence.

Are we even allowed to mention the f word? I might get banned if I spell Nats with a z...

Get out of your socio / friends group. Try looking at the Greens as MPs and their drive for the younger voter as opposed to National who seem to ignore them. So actually I'd say quite the reverse is the case.

Politics boils down to one simple concept, which flavour of unearned income you like best. Your tastes can change as you get older, or as more possibilities are opened up to you.

I hear that in general right wing MPs take pay cuts to become MPs while left wing MPs get massive pay raises, sometimes up to 5x their pre-MP income. I reckon if we capped MP pay at 25% of the income that that person made in the year immediately preceding then we'd see who really has New Zealand's best interests at heart!

Funny how right wingers such as yourself seem to care so little about democracy, being un-prepared to pay some $s, that others paid for in blood and life.

I definitely advocate democracy. How is advocating for lower MP salaries anti - democratic?

There is huge evidence around the world that the system you propose, even if tongue in cheek, leads to massive corruption. Low paid politicians don't look after their countries, they look after those who fund them. Arguably Dick Cheney's prime role in government was to start a war so that his industro military mates could sell trillions of dollars worth of goods and services. Beware Jeb Bush is funded by the same crowd. Similarly gun lobbies, farming lobbies, Israeli money, Wall Street good and bad, and you don't have the world's most powerful country remotely run in the best interest of the country, it is run in the best interests of whoever pays the politicians the most, either directly or indirectly.
Then contemplate countries where things are less transparent still.
Here I don't think there is significant corruption, nor do I think National is especially right wing now they've got over the economically disastrous power company sales, but if you are governed by a leveraged property owning elite, then it is likely that the leveraged property owning elite will be looked after.
