Visa, Foodstuffs say Pak’nSave, New World and Four Square supermarkets to offer customers contactless payments option

Foodstuffs' Pak’nSave, New World and Four Square supermarkets will start using Visa's contactless payments technology from late this year.

In a statement Visa and Foodstuffs say shoppers will have the option of paying via credit, debit or prepaid cards enabled with Visa's payWave technology.

"Cardholders will be able to wave their Visa payWave-enabled card in front of the payment terminal to make purchases under $80 without the need to sign or use their PIN, and enter a PIN for any transactions over $80."

Contactless payments will start to be rolled out at Foodstuffs stores in late 2014 as the technology is installed at supermarket check out lanes.

"We believe this new technology will provide shoppers with an easier, faster and more convenient experience at the checkout," Foodstuffs New Zealand managing director Steve Anderson said.

Caroline Ada, Visa’s country manager for New Zealand and the South Pacific, said there are now 15,000 contactless payments terminals in place in New Zealand, with 1.5 million transactions done during December.

Launched in August 2011, Visa last year said New Zealanders completed one million transactions via its contactless payment enabled credit cards for the first time in one month during October.

Rival MasterCard also has credit cards that enable contactless payments via its PayPass technology, whereby consumers hold their credit card in front of a contactless terminal in order to pay.
