Westpac says new payments service will let customers buy direct from merchants

Westpac says it's aiming to launch a service by September through which customers will be able to buy direct from a merchant's website.

The new service, named Direct From Account, is being developed through a partnership with DPS Payment Express.

"When available, Direct From Account will enable customers to purchase goods or services via a merchant’s website and extends the merchant’s reach to customers who do not have, or prefer not to use, a card online," Westpac says.

"Once a participating merchant has received online payment confirmation through Direct From Account, they will be able to issue an e-receipt and promptly dispatch goods or provide services. This will eliminate the need for the merchant to manually reconcile payments from bank accounts before providing goods or services."

The bank says merchants won't need to make any development effort nor incur any integration cost, so long as they already use the Payment Express platform.

Meanwhile, Westpac says it's willing to work with other banks so they too can offer this service to their customers too.
