South Auckland police have launched an investigation into allegations a 54 year-old man and others have been using weapons to enforce compliance with loans from a pay day lender.

Counties Manukau Police say the investigation stems from complaints about Pay Day Loans, which is also known as 20/50 Loans. A police statement says Gavin John Marsich appeared in the Manukau District Court today charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

They say it has been alleged Marsich and others use "offensive" weapons following non-compliance with loan terms, which include seven-day repayment. Pay Day Loans offers small cash loans. Police are seeking information from anyone who may have come into contact with Marsich's business.

"We are requesting anyone who has had contact with Mr Marsich or any other representatives of his company Pay Day Loans to report any concerns to Police," the statement quotes Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzini saying.

"The alleged behaviour is unacceptable. We need people to come forward - any information from the public will assist with the investigation and ensure those responsible are held accountable."

"We would like to remind the public that they should report any threat of violence to Police," says Pizzini.

The police believe most victims will be from Manurewa and the wider South Auckland community.

However Marsich told Radio New Zealand the allegations of standover tactics weren't true and the weapon was a knife he uses to prepare meat.

"Anyone who believes they may be a victim of this type of behaviour should contact Counties Manukau Police CIB on 09 261 1321. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Isn't this just a small scale amateur version of the US military, a tool for the world biggest loan shark?
