Advertised rents on Trade Me Property remained as flat as a pancake in September.

The national median asking rent for residential properties advertised on the website in September was $620 a week, down from $625 in August but unchanged from September last year.

The median asking rent has remained at $620 a week for all of this year apart from April and August, when it was briefly $625.

Around the country median advertised rents were down in September compared to August in five regions: Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Canterbury and Otago which had the biggest monthly decline of $50 a week.

Going in the opposite direction median advertised rents increased between August and September in Waikato, Gisborne, Taranaki, Nelson/Tasman, Marlborough and Southland, with Gisborne having the biggest monthly increase of $70 a week.

Four regions were sitting still, with rent unchanged for the month in Northland, Auckland, Manawatu/Whanganui and Wellington Region.

The number of new rental listings the website received in September this year was down almost 5% compared to September last year.

However, September is usually a fairly quiet month for both tenants and landlords, with rental activity traditionally picking up in October and November.
