Erica Stanford is an Auckland based National MP, the Minister of Education and Immigration, and has been tipped as a potential National Party leadership contender.

MPs are currently locked in the National caucus room, following an urgent meeting called by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon amid leadership speculation.

Stanford has been a name tipped who could potentially take over, should Luxon lose a leadership confidence vote.

Stanford has been an MP since 2017, taking over her former boss Murray McCully's Auckland East Coast Bays seat.

Stanford has held a range of jobs before coming into Parliament. In her maiden speech, she said her first job was at The Warehouse stacking shelves on the night shift for $4.50 an hour.

She has also worked as a reality TV producer, in international sales and for McCully. At school she played the bassoon and hockey.

Stanford has been open about being unable to sleep well and switch off, loves coke zero and her nickname among staff is the 'sheriff in stilettos'.

She's a dinosaur. 

Perhaps the most intelligent dinosaur they have (it's a low bar) but a dinosaur.

Nine years and a very effective MP in opposition and even more so in her cabinet portfolios. Quite obviously she has been well schooled by her sponsor, the wiley Murray McCully, in the way to present herself and deal with the challenges of the media, the public service and parliament itself. As such she offers in my opinion much more substance and capability than PM Luxon evidenced at the time he replaced Judith Collins. A Prime Ministership is far removed from being an MP though and there is no certainty that she can transition successfully. Still it is achievable and if she does acquire the role and lifts National’s election performance and result from where it has now long been wallowing, that will giver her a deserved running start.

Reality TV producer, international sales, MP staffer…properly qualified for PM?  Maybe this is seen as adequate at a time when English Lit degree is considered good enough for finance minister but I think we deserve better
