BNZ names ex-NZTE director Paul Gestro to the newly created role 'head of Asia desk'

BNZ has appointed a former New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) director, Paul Gestro, to a newly created role as head of Asia desk as it aims to tap growing trade flows with China.

In a statement the bank said Gestro's appointment would extend its ability to open doors for customers looking to export to Asia, as well as encourage investment in New Zealand businesses from the region.

"And the opportunity is significant. Dairy consumption alone is expected to quadruple in China between 2007 and 2015 and at NZ$6.7 billion in the year to November 2012, New Zealand’s exports to China grew 14.5% compared with the previous year," said BNZ partners director, Anthony Healy.

Aside from his time at NZTE, BNZ said Gestro had run a successful export business of his own, - Coastline Flowers. He joined NZTE in 2001 where his roles included New York consul-general and director of international partnerships.
