Here are the key changes to know about in the New Zealand equity market; NZX50 falls -0.4% as Vulcan Steel, Gentrack, Oceania, and The NZX decline; a2 Milk, Serko, SkyCity casino and Kathmandu leads the gainers

Here are the key things you need to know about in the NZX markets over the past 24 hours. Changes are as at 3:00 pm and may change when the market closes at 4:45 pm.

WHAT THE NZX 50 INDEX IS DOING
The NZX50 is down -0.5% today, down -0.1% over the past five trading days. The index has also gained +0.6% over the past month and +6.2% over the past six months, while sitting +4.8% higher than a year ago. Market breadth is negative, with 49 companies declining compared with 34 gainers. 

THE MAIN GAINERS
Among the gainers, a2 Milk (ATM, #8) led the market, rising +3% today and extending its five-day gain to +2%. However, the company is down -1% over the past month, -28% over six months and -19% year-on-year. Serko (SKO, #49) gained +2%, taking its five-day gain to +12%, although it's down -2% over one month, -13% over six months and -38% year-on-year. SkyCity Entertainment (SKC, #36) also rose +2%, extending its gains over five days and one month to +3% and +11%, respectively, while remaining down -16% over six months and -4% year-on-year. Kathmandu Brands (KMD, #50) added +2%, taking its five-day gain to +3%, although the stock stays in decline down -3% over one month, -50% over six months and -57% year-on-year.

THE MAIN DECLINERS
On the downside, Vulcan Steel (VSL, #31) recorded the largest decline among the companies highlighted, falling -4% today despite remaining +6% higher over five days and +5% higher over one month. The company is down -11% over six months and -13% year-on-year. Gentrack (GTK, #45) dropped -3%, extending its five-day decline to -5%, although it is +15% higher over the past month. Gentrack is down -43% over six months and -57% year-on-year. Oceania Healthcare (OCA, #44) fell -3%, leaving it down -1% over five days and -4% over one month, although it's +11% higher year-on-year. The NZX (NZX, #47) declined -2%, although they move +1% higher over five days, +8% higher over six months and +7% higher year-on-year.

KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Port of Tauranga (POT, #9) has received approval under the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024 for its Stella Passage development, subject to conditions and appeal rights. The project involves extending the Sulphur Point container berth by 385 metres in two stages and the Mount Maunganui wharves by 315 metres, using existing cargo storage land within the port’s current footprint. The development also includes associated reclamation and dredging. Port of Tauranga said the project is strategically important for supporting future freight growth, improving supply chain resilience and efficiency, and reducing costs for importers and exporters. The company is reviewing the final decision and conditions.
