Total value of building work consented in the year to March was $28.4 billion, a 7.2% increase

The number of new homes being consented continues rising, with 3677 new dwellings consented in March, according to Statistics NZ.

That's up 8.2% compared to March last year, and was the highest number of new dwellings consented in any month since September last year.

In the 12 months to March this year, 37,813 new dwellings were consented, up 11.0% compared to the previous 12 months.

That was first annual increase in consents over that time period since 2022 and brought an end to a three year run of annual declines.

The total value of building work consented for new dwellings in the March year was $17.22 billion, up 11.5% on the previous 12 months. Additionally, another $2.24 billion of residential alteration work was consented, up a more modest 1.1% on the previous 12 months.

A further $8.97 billion of non-residential building work was consented in the 12 months to March this year, up 1.2% on the previous 12 months.

Non-residential work includes commercial premises such as shops, factories and offices as well as institutional buildings such as hospitals and schools.

That took the total value of all building work consented in the March year to $28.42 billion, up 7.2% on the previous 12 months.
