The Opening Bell: Where currencies start for Friday, May 2, 2014

By Dan Bell

The NZD/USD opens at 0.8635, grinding higher during an evening dominated by weak US data.

US Unemployment Claims came in last night at 344K against an expectation of 317K.

Tonight's Non-Farm Payroll numbers have dominated the market's focus this week - expect a calm day before the possible storm tonight - any major variance from the expectation of 216K jobs will move the USD.

Stock markets currently: Dow Jones -0.13%, S&P -0.01%, FTSE +0.43%.

The NZD opens the crosses - 0.9310 AUD, 0.6220 EUR, 0.5110 GBP, 88.30 JPY, 0.9460 CAD.

In this part of the world - Australian PPI numbers are out at 1.30pm.
