The Opening Bell: Where currencies start for Friday, May 23, 2014

The NZD/USD opens at 0.8560 having fallen from 0.8695 highs on the 15th of May .

The NZD remained in a small 55 point range yesterday finishing relatively unchanged, mirroring a lacklustre performance in other markets.

Overnight US Existing Home Sales came in at 4.65 million which was slightly worse than expectation of 4.71 million and better than the last print of 4.59 million.

US Unemployment claims were 326k, worse than the 298k printed last week and worse than market expectation of 312k.

Stock markets currently: Dow Jones 0.06%, S&P 0.24%, FTSE -0.01%.

The NZD opens the crosses : 0.9275 AUD, 0.6270 EUR, 0.5075 GBP, 87.10 JPY, 0.9325 CAD.

Locally there is no data out today.

US New home sales and German business confidence are released tonight.
