The Opening Bell: Where currencies start for Friday, October 18, 2013

The NZD/USD opens at 0.8490 after trading to interbank highs around 0.8525 overnight.

The US Dollar has been under pressure against most major currencies overnight as investors price in the impact of ongoing fiscal issues and the impact this will have on Fed stimulus decisions.

Global equities have had a mixed session with the Dow Jones Index down 0.15% while the S&P 500 is up 0.49%. Gold prices have surged 2.85% but Oil is down 1.56%.

The NZD opens at 0.8820 AUD, 0.6212 EUR, 0.5256 GBP, 83.15 JPY, 0.8744 CAD.

Nothing to report from NZ today. From Australia we get a speech from RBA Governor Stevens at 2pm. The focus today will be on a raft of Chinese data including GDP, Industrial Production and Retail Sales all released at 3pm.
