The Opening Bell: Where currencies start on Tuesday, December 16, 2014

The NZDUSD opens at 0.7729 (mid-rate) this morning.

The NZDUSD opens lower this morning with investors adding to their long USD positions on expectations that Yellen will take a more hawkish stance on monetary policy at this week’s FOMC.

Once again equity markets have taken centre stage with European markets tumbling as investors remained concerned about  European Central Bank inaction.

European and US equity markets continue to fall - Dow -0.17%, Nikkei -1.57%, Shanghai +0.52%, FTSE -1.53% DAX -5.36%, CAC -5.22

Gold prices are lower trading  at $1213 (-$9), Oil prices continue to fall losing another 2.49% trading at $56.37

The current indicative mid-rates are:
NZDUSD           0.7729
NZDEUR           0.6213
NZDGBP           0.4941
NZDJPY            94.14
NZDAUD           0.9415
NZDCAD           0.9001

There are no domestic data releases today
